How to choose a chiropractic college

You should not choose a chiropractic college the same way you chose your undergraduate school;by focusing on location and major. Chiropractic programs are distinctly different from one another and selection is much more complicated.

You will want to review the elements that go into a chiropractic education and choose a program that best matches the things you value in your chiropractic future.

  1. First, you will need to understand the elements of a good fit.

Read through all the schools’ literature and online information to sort out each program’s stance on the following issues.

Philosophy:  This represents the purpose of chiropractic in health care and the way you will be taught to think about your professional role.

Technique:Technique is the art of the adjustment. You will want to look for a program with lots of techniques taught with precision and lots of hands on practice.

Business: It is imperative that you be taught how to run a practice and to be a sound business person. Look for a program with lots of business training resources.

Leadership:Leaders are not born – they are trained. You will want to look for a program that both models leadership and which creates opportunities for you to train to become the leader you are meant to be.

  1. Visit schools and find out more.

Once you have narrowed down you options to two or three chiropractic colleges, you will want to take the time to plan a visit to each campus. This might seem like a lot of work, but it is truly a necessity when you are making such an important decision.

Each school has a campus visit program. Be sure to register and attend a formal campus tour. The tour will tell you a lot about what the school focuses on and will help you to experience the brand first hand.

While you are on campus, be sure to talk to some students attending school there. The students will give you a sense of the culture and the kind of place it really is beyond the marketing materials.
