Dr. Judith R. Ehlich

Dr. Judith R. Ehlich, 81, of Cowpens, South Carolina passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. She was born September 20, 1942 in Dysart, Pennsylvania to the late Regis Hertzog and Rose Marie Judd Hertzog.

Dr. Judy was a chiropractor and retired on her 80th birthday, after 58 years of service to the community. She graduated in 1964 from the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic in New York, where she met her husband, Dr. Bruce Ehlich. At the time, she was one of only two women enrolled at the college. Throughout her career she was a member of several associations, including the International Chiropractors Association, where she was named a Distinguished Fellow of the ICA in 1999; the South Carolina Chiropractic Association, where she was named to the SCCA Hall of Fame; the Palmetto State Chiropractic Association; She was the first woman to serve on the South Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners. When Sherman College opened, she served as the Dean of Women.

Dr. Judy was of the Catholic faith. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gaffney, South Carolina, and participated in the Monday Night Rosary Prayer Group. She was also active in the Garden Club of Chesnee. In recognition of her 80th birthday and her service to the community, the City of Chesnee issued a Proclamation declaring, September the 20th as Dr. Judith Ehlich day. 

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Dr. Kim Ehlich McDowell (Dr. Craig) and Kendra Ehlich Elliott (Jimmy); sons, Dr. Bruce Christopher Ehlich (Dr. Beth) and Dr. d’Artagnon “Tan” Ehlich (Mandy);  sister, Ariadyne Herbert (David); brother, Jimmy Hertzog (Joanne); daughter-in-law, Gina Ehlich; grandchildren, Carson McDowell and Josh McDowell (Amy), Caroline Ehlich, Hayden Ehlich, and William Ehlich, Christian Woody (Kenneth), Owen Ehlich and Griffin Ehlich, and Colbi Elliott and Carli Elliott; and great grandchildren, Evan McDowell, Charlotte Claire McDowell, and Leah McDowell, and Theo Woody and Hampton Woody. 

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Bruce Carl Ehlich; son, Dr. Darryl Ehlich; brother, Pat Hertzog; and granddaughters, Lindsay McDowell, and Olivia Ehlich. 

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Eggers Funeral Home of Chesnee. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 12:00PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gaffney, South Carolina with Father James Touceau officiating. Burial will follow at Springhill Memorial Gardens in Chesnee. 

Upon learning of Dr. Judith Ehlich’s passing, ICA President, Dr. Selina Sigafoose Jackson stated, “The legacy that Dr. Judith and her husband Dr. Bruce Ehlich leave behind in the chiropractic profession is significant both from the legacy of so many of their children becoming chiropractors; but also their lifetime commitment to helping the ICA and state associations promote high standards in the profession. Our prayers are with the entire Ehlich family.” 

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Dr. Kim Ehlich McDowell.
